Prevention is the most effective form of protection. These tips from our firefighters can help keep your family and home safe.
IN AN EMERGENCY, ALWAYS CALL 911 FIRST
DIAL → 911Fire Prevention
- →Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly.
- →Never leave cooking unattended on the stove.
- →Keep flammable items at least 3 feet from heat sources.
- →Have a fire extinguisher on every level of your home.
Home Safety
- →Create and practice a home escape plan with two exits per room.
- →Install carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas.
- →Keep hallways and exits clear of clutter.
- →Know where your main water, gas, and electric shut-offs are.
Emergency Preparedness
- →Keep an emergency kit with water, food, and first aid supplies.
- →Know your evacuation routes and meeting points.
- →Sign up for Mercer County emergency alerts.
- →Keep important documents in a fireproof safe or digitally backed up.
Weather Emergencies
- →During severe storms, move to an interior room on the lowest floor.
- →Never drive through flooded roadways — turn around, don't drown.
- →Keep flashlights and batteries accessible during storm season.
- →Charge devices and fill bathtubs with water before major storms.
Child Safety
- →Teach children to "Stop, Drop, and Roll" if clothes catch fire.
- →Keep matches and lighters out of children's reach.
- →Practice crawling low under smoke with your children.
- →Make sure children know how and when to call 911.
Electrical Safety
- →Don't overload power strips or extension cords.
- →Replace frayed or damaged electrical cords immediately.
- →Use GFCI outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoors.
- →Have your home's wiring inspected if it's over 30 years old.
